As simple as the phrase ‘I do’ might seem, it has lifetime implications. So biko, before you utter those words, there are things you should know.
We all have an idea of what marriage is all about. We have hopes, dreams and expectations of what should look like. We watch movies, TV shows and even observe marriages in the world around us to try and get a glimpse of this thing we call holy matrimony. But we don’t really know until we’re there. Here are few important things to make sure you know before you both walk down the aisle because no one wants to take chances with the rest of their lives.
- The difference between like, lust, and love
It’s important to be sure on the difference because only one is worthy of marriage, and trust me when I say it’s love.
2. How you each feel about faith
This is one important thing that shouldn’t be ignored… Discuss it before saying “I DO”. It is very important to know each others’ belief and what it means to your lives so as to avoid major differences in the future. But, from instances, I think it’s better to walk down the aisle with someone you share the same faith with.
3. The past
Like it or not, it will help shape who you both are and define what you both want. You don’t need to provide every single detail, but you should have a general roadmap for how you each got to the present.
4. Each others’ parents, siblings, immediate family
These people might end up being your in-laws. It’s important to meet them before saying “I Do” so you know what you are getting into.
5. Their friends
I’m a believer that meeting the friends can be even more important than meeting the family, because friends are the people that your better half chooses to spend time around. If you haven’t met your partner’s friends, then the relationship isn’t that serious and certainly not serious enough for an engagement.
6. Each others’ career goals
Knowing what you each want to achieve and supporting those dreams is a critical foundation for any couple.
7. How they take their coffee in the morning
This might seem trivial but love sometimes comes in the tiniest details. It’s very important to pay attention to those little things that your partner loves doing or eating.
8. Their hobbies
Be it traveling, reading, swimming, running, dancing or even eating, you should pay attention to the things that your love loves to do. It helps in understanding each other better and getting along well.
9. How to fight and make up
Unless you are acting, you are definitely going to disagree. It happens. And to an extent, it is healthy. But conflict has its benefits if you use it productively. Use respectful language with each other and be willing to listen to your partner.
10. What you want for the future
Be sure you both want the same things for later in life. One of the top reasons for divorce has been said to be that the couple later discovered they wanted different things in life. Be sure that you share your thoughts, hopes and dreams for what the future might look like together.
