The saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is quite a popular one, but are apples really as healthy as they say they are? Apparently, yes.
Apples are healthy fruits. They contain fiber, manganese, copper, and vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, E, and K, among other nutrients, not to mention they are delicious.
One medium apple equals 1.5 cups of fruit — which is 3/4 of the 2-cup daily recommended dietary intake of fruits. When eaten regularly, apples provide numerous health benefits, one of which is the fact that apples actually aid weight loss. Because of their high fiber and water content, apples are quite filling. People who eat apples before a meal feel fuller than those who do not, causing them to eat less and therefore, consume fewer calories. Furthermore, apples have some natural compounds in them that may help promote weight loss.
Another health benefit of apples is their low glycemic index, which is a measure of how much blood sugar levels rise after eating. There is increasing evidence that a low-glycemic-index diet may help prevent diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers. Some studies have also shown that apples, specifically, may positively affect bone health. Researchers believe that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds in the fruit may help promote bone density and strength.
