An emotional Meghan Markle appeared to hold back tears as she admitted she’s “not OK” in an interview about the pressures of her new role as a royal mum.

Speaking in a preview clip for their behind-the-scenes documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, the Duchess of Sussex said the past year has been “really challenging”.

The programme will follow Meghan, husband Prince Harry, and baby Archie on their 10-day Royal Tour of Africa last month, and promises to “explain a lot”.

In a one-to-one interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby, Meghan is asked about the “true pressures of life in the spotlight and the toll it has taken on them both”.

She replies: “Look, any woman especially when they are pregnant you’re really vulnerable and so that was made really challenging, and then when you have a newborn – you know.

“And especially as a woman, it’s a lot. So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed it’s, well…”

She then cuts to thank Tom for checking how she is doing.

“And, also thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m OK. But it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”

Following up on her answer, Tom asks: “And the answer is, would it be fair to say, not really OK, as in it’s really been a struggle?”

Meghan pauses before replying simply: “Yes”.

The rest of the trailer shows clips from their successful tour, which saw the Sussex family visit South Africa, Botswana, Angola and Malawi.

Meghan says: “Oh my goodness, it’s the most inspiring, we just got here and to see everything that they are doing but also that it’s not just the girls that are feeling empowered, it’s all the roles of the men and the young boys who are also helping them.”

It was Archie’s first Royal Tour, and he carried out his first-ever official engagement – meeting Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his family.

Meghan and Archie stayed in South Africa while Harry travelled to the other countries on his own before the family were united for the final leg of the trip.
