If you are trying to work on your fitness goals this New Year, you may want to develop a healthy habit known as intermittent fasting.
What is Intermittent Fasting?
Intermittent fasting is simply a pattern of eating that helps you lose weight faster and more effectively without complicating your life or compromising your health.
How does it work?
If you are a fan of routines and schedules, you will enjoy intermittent fasting. When it comes to intermittent fasting, there are two states that the body can get into known as the “Fed state” and the “Fasted state”. The “Fed state” actually starts whenever you are eating and lasts for about three to five hours after you have eaten so your body can absorb the food properly. It will be difficult for your body to burn fat when it is in this state because your insulin levels are still high as your body is still trying to absorb and digest the food that it just took in and this may take a while. This is why it is not advisable to exercise after eating, it can disrupt the digestion process and also you will be wasting your time as you are likely not going to lose any weight.
After this whole process, your body goes into a state known as the post-absorptive state which simply means that your body is not trying to digest or absorb any meal. This process usually lasts for 8 to 12 hours after your last meal which is when your body finally enters the “Fasted state”. In this state, your body can easily burn weight, especially weight that was inaccessible during the “Fed state” because your insulin levels are now low.
Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting
- It makes your life simpler
Intermittent fasting can actually make your life easier as you won’t have to worry about eating breakfast in the morning. All you have to do is drink enough water before heading out and of course have your bottle of water with you all day. Then, you only have to worry about eating one meal a day once your fasting period is over. Therefore, eliminating the stress of preparing two other meals.
2. It helps you live longer
Studies have been carried out that prove that starving yourself can actually help you live longer. This is possible because the body tends to get into a state of survival when it has been denied food for a while. It either feeds on it’s reserves or it automatically puts itself in a state of staying alive and strong even without food. During intermittent fasting, you may be feeling hungry and weak but it is not real. Your body is actually adjusting itself to that pressure in order to protect you. After a while, you will notice that you no longer get hungry. Then it becomes easier to fast.
3. It reduces the risk of cancer
Studies carried out on a group of cancer patients who were to undergo chemotherapy showed that fasting before treatment helps to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and prevent cancer-induced deaths.
4. It is easier than dieting
Intermittent fasting is actually easier to implement than dieting because it requires little effort. For dieting, you actually still have to prepare your meals and eat them three times a day. For intermittent fasting, you can still eat your regular meals but you eat once a day, then stay hungry for almost 12 hours during which your body easily burns weight. The reason why most diet plans fail is the extra effort needed to put in which can be overwhelming sometimes. For intermittent fasting, little to no effort is needed. Just forget about food for half of the day and focus on more important things, but drink a lot of water. Then eat once in a day once your fasting period is over and begin the cycle again.
5. It helps you lose weight
Of course, this is the ultimate goal. With intermittent fasting, you lose weight, keep fit and stay healthy. Just make sure you drink a lot of water so you don’t get dehydrated and tired easily.
