HBO on Tuesday released the Game of Thrones Season 8 trailer, previewing the final season of the network’s wildly popular high fantasy drama, reflecting what fans already know: These final, near-feature length episodes are going to be really, really big.

Winter is finally almost here as HBO releases the first full-length trailer for Game of Thrones season eight.

With the fantasy saga coming to what is sure to be an epic conclusion when it returns on April 14, the two-minute promo will whet the appetites of fans eager for the trip back to Westeros.

But what does the new footage reveal about the looming conflict between Jon Snow and his allies and the Night King (with Mad Queen Cersei sneakily plotting to undermine both)?

Game of Thrones kicked off in 2011, adapting George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series into the cinematic television series that has since captured fans around the globe.

Over the course of seven seasons, fans have followed the lives, adventures and tragedies of a whole host of characters from Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Arya Stark to Tyrion Lannister and Brienne of Tarth.

However, Game of Thrones season 8 which is the final season premieres on Sunday April 14 at 9 pm on HBO.

The trailer features plenty of new footage of all the fan-favourite returning characters, focusing especially on Jon, Dany, Arya, Sansa Stark, Tyrion, Cersei, Jaime Lannister, Brienne, Samwell Tarly and more.

Here we get titillating glimpses of the final battles to come: Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow, steely as they lead their army on horseback; Grey Worm donning his helmet; the feet of a White Walker’s horse touching down in Westeros.

The teaser previews dark days to come in Westeros as winter has finally arrived, and the humans prepare for a deadly clash with the White Walkers.

“I know death,” says Arya Stark. “He’s got many faces. I look forward to seeing this one.” Going by the frenzy that greeted the trailer, fans equally look forward to seeing this final season.

Show-runners David Benioff and DB Weiss were reportedly against even releasing a trailer in the first place, the expectation was that the preview would give away little about the season eight storyline.
