The nutritional and curative powers of honey have been known from ancient times, and it has often been called “sweet medicine”.
BETTER THAN SUGAR
Honey, unlike white sugar(sucrose), is made up of carbohydrates(levulose, dextrose and sucrose). If taken in moderation, it helps the body use calcium, thus helping to build bones.
White sugar, on the other hand, decalcifies or weakens bones.
INTRODUCING HONEY INTO THE CHILD’S DIET
Some stomachs cannot tolerate honey alone but can accept it if it is diluted in liquid.
As in anything else, it should be administered progressively.
Around 6 months of age, a healthy baby can be given part of a spoonful dissolved in fruit juice or in the baby’s milk.
From this time onward, honey is better than table sugar for sweetening the child’s purees.

POLEN AND ROYAL JELLY
In addition to honey, other products which are produced by the honeybee may be added to the baby’s diet.
Pollen has a proportionally increased protein and fat content.
It does not contain anything significant in the way of vitamins and the minerals.
POLLEN IS PROTECTIVE AND CURATIVE
However, it does have prophylactic and curative effects which may be due to its combination of nutrients or to the substances which are not yet understood.
It has a positive effect on anaemia, growth retardation, poor digestion, lack of appetite, nervous disorders, depression and lack of energy.
Some scientists claim that it has anti-carcinogenic properties as well.
From the age of five months, a baby can be given a few grains of pollen. The baby may eat it with displeasure at first, but after a few weeks, the baby will actually enjoy it.
At eight months, the baby can be given a small spoonful of it and at a year, a level tablespoon.
Pollen can be given directly or can be dissolved in milk or fruit juice.
