It is safe to say that the first controversy of 2016 in the Nigerian music industry has been born in the usual manner that new beefs are born out of the ‘That-artiste-did-not-deserve-the-award’ issue. The Next rated award of the headies is usually the booby trap where beef is born because the award comes with a brand new car. Two years ago, Burna boy fell out with Sean Tizzle because of this particular award. It wasn’t really contested last year when Patoranking clinched the award though there were still some murmurings but this year, our country people took it to the battlefield literally.
The next rated award this year came with the prize of a 2015 Hyundai SUV and even though Bovi, one of the show’s hosts tried to pull a ‘Steve Harvey’ on us, Reekado Banks, an upcoming artiste under Don Jazzy’s recording label Mavin clinched the most coveted award. THIS DID NOT GO DOWN WELL WITH MANY. The audience didn’t hesitate to show their disappointment as the mood in the hall suddenly got dampened. Twittersphere was agog as most people believed that the award should have gone to Olamide’s YBNL artiste ‘Lil Kesh’. Everyone played cool until YBNL’s Adekunle Gold’s song ‘Sade’ won the award for the ‘best alternative song’ and the entire YBNL crew clad in agbada climbed the stage. Just after Adekunle Gold accepted the award, YBNL Boss Olamide yanked the Microphone and pulled a Kanye West on us. He plainly stated how that he felt Lil Kesh deserved the award because he dropped hits back to back all year long. He expressed himself in between curses directed at the organizers of the award and ANYONE who cared to ‘catch the sub’. The entire audience cheered him on as having spoken their mind.
The Mavins did not take this lightly however. When Don Jazzy came up to receive his special recognition award later, he fired back saying: “I do not like to go for awards… I only came to support my children… Egbon Olamide, If you want the car [The one Reekado won] come and take it” To say that the entire hall exploded is an understatement. The Mavins and an entire group of supporters stood up and walked out of the hall right behind Don Jazzy who held onto his award. Olamide was in the next category of awards announced the artiste of the year but by then the hall was almost empty. It was at this point that the headies flip the script and ended the award show. The live broadcast came to an abrupt end on HipTV a few minutes later.
Many in attendance tweeted about how that blows had been exchanged outside the hall and that things got really ugly. Fans began to take sides on social media saying that it was never about the car because Olamide had recently acquired a brand new Range rover jeep for Lil Kesh. Many also believed that Olamide did not insult Don Jazzy and that the Mavin Boss acted immaturely. Olamide later took to twitter to rain curses on Don Jazzy roping D’Banj’s sloppy career into the matter. Meanwhile former Mo’hits star Wande Coal weighed in on the matter tweeting: ‘LOL…Passing through’ and in very irrelevant news, Self-acclaimed King of rap VIC O has said he will be dropping a diss track directed at both parties just like he did for Drake and Meek Mill.
My take on this embarrassing occurrence? Both parties were way out of line. The violence that was introduced into the matter doesn’t even speak well of both parties who are brand ambassadors and role models to many Nigerian youths… And if it was all a publicity stunt, I just have this to say, Una no try at all!!!
