All thanks to a strong Saturday, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ continued its dominance, beating The Revenant at the weekend box office to stay atop the North American box office in its fourth weekend. As earlier reported, The Force Awakens has been crushing the competition since its record-breaking opening last month and just a few days ago, the movie became the highest-grossing domestic film of all time.
On Friday though, the wide-release of The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, managed to outperform the space epic but it couldn’t hold on for the entire weekend. In the end, The Force Awakens took in $41.6 million for first place. The film also broke box office records when it debuted over the weekend in China, where it made $53 million to add to its already enormous global earnings.
In a relatively close second domestically was The Revenant with $38 million in ticket sales. Daddy’s Home came in a distant third place with $15 million. The Forest, a new thriller with Natalie Dormer and Taylor Kinney, and Sisters secured fourth and fifth places with $13.1 million and $7.2 million, respectively.
Rounding out the Top 10 were The Hateful Eight in sixth place with $6.4 million, while the seventh spot went to The Big Short with $6.3 million. Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip nabbed eighth place with $5.5 million, and Joy finished in ninth with $4.5 million.
