The link between cocaine use and stroke in adults

I honestly don’t get how anyone can still do crack, with all we’ve seen and heard of its effects!

Anyway… Recent discovery indicates that adults mostly in their 30s and 40s, may raise their risk of stroke by six-fold every time they use cocaine. This research was carried out on adults who were victims of stroke. It was discovered that those who used cocaine before  the attack raised the risk up to eight-fold when the drug was smoked in crack form.

It was also proven that cocaine causes rapid increase in blood pressure and also can cause cardiac problems that can lead to stroke.

The researchers analyzed data from a study that took place between 1992 and 2008, identifying more than 1,000 cases of ischemic stroke in people aged 15 to 49. Ischemic stroke is caused by the blockage of a blood vessel in or leading to the brain, often by a blood clot, and is the most common kind of stroke.

In particular, smoking crack cocaine seems to be associated with stroke, whereas cocaine hydrochloride causes mainly bleeding of the brain. Unfortunately, it has same effect on both addicted users and first-time users.
