Due for release on May 19, ‘Alien: Covenant’ is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated films of the spring. It will be directed by Ridley Scott as a sort of continuation/rebirth of one of the science fiction genre’s most sprawling and ambitious franchises. As of March 1, we have more to be excited about than just a title and a vague concept.

A new trailer for ‘Alien: Covenant’ was released on the first of the month, and as this story puts it, it’s almost too good. Plenty of films, particularly when it comes to sci-fi and fantasy, have delivered spectacular trailers only to fall short upon their actual release. Projects like ‘Man Of Steel,’ ‘Exodus: Gods And Kings,’ and even ‘Prometheus,’ the last movie in the ‘Alien’ universe, all come to mind. For this reason, a great trailer can almost make a fan feel apprehensive. Still, there are a ton of fans of this franchise, and the trailer is incredibly exciting.

That, naturally, makes us want to know more. As should be the case with any successful marketing campaign for a new movie, this trailer and the surrounding publicity has left us with some big questions that still need answering.

What’s The Deal With ‘Prometheus?’

This isn’t really a question that can be answered in a sentence or two, but one of the biggest takeaways from the recent trailer is that we’re left wondering how much ‘Alien: Covenant’ will have to do with the mostly disappointing ‘Prometheus.’ There’s definitely some continuation, most notably in the form of cast members Noomi Rapace (who plays Elizabeth Shaw) and Michael Fassbender (who played the android David and will play both David and a new android, Walter, this time around). And yet, the vibe of the trailer and the synopsis about a group of explorers out to colonize a new planet don’t appear to have much in common with the preceding project. It will be interesting to see if this ends up feeling more like a sequel or a reboot.

Who’s Walter?

As stated, Walter is a new role being played by Michael Fassbender. One article examined the new trailer and determined that Walter is a “kindly twin” of David’s and an (apparently) “benign member of the Covenant’s crew.” It makes a certain sense that if people are building androids they might make certain models in the same image (just like cars), so maybe that’s the only link between David and Walter. But this new android character is certainly interesting, and it’s only natural to feel that we figured out all there is to know about him yet.

Where’s James Franco?

James Franco seems to be able to do a little bit of everything these days. He’s still at his best in outrageous comedies like ‘This Is The End’ and ‘Pineapple Express,’ but he proved to have some Oscar-caliber chops in ‘147 Hours.’ He also played a nice role in bringing the ‘Planet Of The Apes’ franchise back to life. However, in this trailer, he’s doing…well, nothing. Franco is the most interesting new addition to the cast, and we’ve yet to see him or learn much about his role at this point other than that he’s the captain of the Covenant at one point and is the husband of Katherine Waterston’s character, Daniels.

Will There Be A Video Game?

Trailer aside, this has been a pretty consistent series when it comes to video game tie-ins. There have been plenty of decent games made to based on the ‘Alien’ movies, and there even a few recent examples. One game called ‘Alien: Isolation’ was released for consoles in 2014 to strong reviews. An ‘Aliens’ themed slot reel is also highlighted as part of an online assortment of popular casino titles featured at online gaming platforms. The title is based on the movie of the same name, and uses licensed material from James Cameron’s beloved sequel to make for a fun and fresh take on the classic slots game. Those two recent examples give you an idea of just how broad the ‘Alien’ games have been and we’re hoping ‘Covenant’ might build on this legacy. We’ve already heard they’re working on some kind of virtual reality experience for the movie but we’ll have to wait to learn more about that.

Will We Learn About The Sequel?

This film hasn’t come out yet, but we already know that it’s intended to be the middle project of a prequel trilogy. ‘Prometheus’ was the first installment, and ‘Alien: Covenant’ is the second. That means that we know there’s going to be a third movie but it’s all going to depend on what happens in ‘Alien: Covenant.’ No one has any idea how closely the new movie will tie in with ‘Prometheus’ and this relationship could affect what the third movie is going to be like. The next picture could be a bridge leading us back to the original 1979 classic or it might try to stand on its own and help to mop of the mess of ‘Prometheus.’
