This speech is the best thing I have heard an African leader say this year! “We can no longer continue to make policy for ourselves, for our country on the basis on whatever support the western world or France or the European Union can give us,” President Nana Akufo-Addo began.
The Ghanaian president was hosting French President, Emmanual Macron who was visiting Ghana, and they held a joint press conference in Accra.
A journalist had asked if France was going to increase its aid to other African countries besides it former colonies, and Akufo-Addo gave the rousing reply.
“I hope that the comments I am about to make will not offend the questioner too much and some people around here,” he said, before going ahead to explain why it was necessary for African countries to quit depending on foreign aid.
“We have to get away from this mindset of dependency,” he said, adding, “France will do whatever it wants to do for its own sake, and when those coincide with ours, ‘tant mieux’ [so much the better] as the French people say.”
Macron was visibly shaken by the speech, fidgeting and watching Akufo-Addo as the latter spoke.
