Ituen graduated with a BA in Theatre Arts from Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife then trained at the London College of Fashion, majoring in Tailoring and Clothing Technology. Through her experience there, she was able to discover her passion as she designed and tailored costumes for stage productions and beauty pageants during her undergraduate years. Later on, she started working for established designers, making samples, building a repertoire and making bespoke bridal wear.She then took it a notch higher by designing and producing garments under the Ituen Basi label and sold to selected outlets in the UK before starting her own her first homegrown collection in Lagos, Nigeria in 2009.
Her unique use of Ankara produces exceptional but wearable art pieces, which are contemporary expressions of enduring sophistication. This has made her pieces a roaring success in Nigeria. Her fresh design interpretation and fabric treatment have since begun a new era of unique Ankara designs. Her ‘Ankara and Beads’ collection earned her “The Most Innovative Designer” award in 2009 whilst her ‘Independence’ collection earned her “Emerging Designer of the Year, Africa” 2010 at the Africa Fashion Week, Johannesburg. In 2011, at the first ever Arise Magazine Fashion Week, her ‘Love Series’ collection earned her the “Most Creative Designer”. Her ‘Double Take’ collection at the 2012 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa in Johannesburg, earned her “Designer of the Year, Africa”
