The 4th of February is the annual world cancer day, an initiative founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to create more awareness and educate people about cancer and also urge government and individuals to do their best to curtail the disease.

The theme for 2019-2021 is tagged “I Am and I Will” which gives everyone the mandate to do their bit to prevent and eradicate cancer for good.

Meanwhile, in your own little world and space, you can take these steps to create more awareness about and prevent cancer in your own way.

  1. Quit Smoking

Yes. Quit or reduce your smoking habit to the minimal. It is very unhealthy and is also the number one cause of lung cancer. I know it can be addictive and not very easy but get some help if you have to. You will be saving your health and maybe even your life.

2. Eat Clean

Cut out all unhealthy foods from your diet or reduce to the minimal. Your diet and lifestyle is the major determinant of how much at risk you are of getting cancer. Reduce your consumption of processed, sugary and high-calorie foods. Stop the carbonated drinks, sodas and alcohol. Drink water instead, lots of it and eat whole foods. They are healthier.

3. Stay Away From The Sun

Overexposure to the sun can damage the skin and eventually lead to skin cancer. Stay out of the sun as much as possible and if you have to, then take some precautionary measures. Wear sun glasses, scarves or hats. Use sun screen on your skin. Lots of lotions and cosmetics been produced these days contain sun screen so buy them and use. Do your bit.

4. Exercise

Gone are the days when exercise was meant for only overweight or obese people. Everyone  notwithstanding your size, weight or height needs to exercise and be physically active in some way. Sign up in a gym and go there to work out at least 3 times a week. It will do you a whole lot of good and keep you fit and healthy. You can also take up dancing or swimming classes if you are not cut out for working out in a gym. Just make sure to stay physically active.

5. Practice Safe Sex

This is a statement that is always publicized and promoted everywhere. If you are going to get intimate, especially with someone whose sexual health and medical history you have no clue about, at least, be sensible enough to use protection. Such carelessness in your sex life can bring about cancers of the reproductive and sexual organs, both male and female. Be wise.

6. Get Immunized

Visit your doctor or the nearest health center around you and take HPV and Hepatitis vaccines. Some hospitals even give out these vaccines for free. Don’t be caught unawares.

7. Check Your Medical History

Find out your medical history as a child and even your family’s medical history. Run vital tests and find out if any family member has a history of cancer or has died of cancer in the past. Early detection can also help to prevent or curtail the cancer. If you are a lady, check your breasts frequently for lumps and always relay your suspicions to your doctor. He is the health expert and will know what to do. All these will help you be more aware, alert and smarter about preventing and eradicating cancer for good.

Checking family health history and early detection can go a long way in preventing and treating cancer.
