DD Travels: World’s nicest and worst cities

At the mention of the world’s nicest city, one would expect to hear cities like Paris, Tokyo, or even new York City, but this cities didn’t make it to the top, as a matter of fact, they didn’t make it to the top 30 cities. Judging 230 cities based on education, health care, crime, political stability, recreation and transport, Vienna city has emerged first yet again for the seventh time in a row.  Vienna, Austria’s grand capital on the Danube river, offers the highest quality of life of all cities in the world, with the highest compensation and hardship allowances for international staff.

The city is populated with 1.7 million inhabitants and they all benefit from the city’s cafe culture and museums, theatres and operas. Rents and public transport costs in the city are relatively cheap compared with other western capitals. Following the city on the list are: Switzerland’s Zurich, New Zealand’s Auckland, Germany’s Munich and Canada’s Vancouver. Making them the best five nicest city in the world. The best African entry on the list was South Africa’s Durban at number 85.

On the other hand, the Iraqi capital Baghdad once more took its place at the bottom of a liveable cities due to the incessant violence recorded in the city since the American-led invasion in 2003. Here are the top five and bottom five cities on the list:

  5. Vancouver, Canada

Bottom 5 cities

  1. Khartoum, Sudan
  2. Port-au-Prince, Haiti
  3. Sana’a, Yemen
  4. Bangui, Central African Republic
  5. Baghdad, Iraq
